Endurance GB – International Competition World Class Performance Plan (wcpp) 2009-2010

Final version now published January 14th 2010

Great Britain has been committed to sending an international endurance team since the first FEI event in 1984. British teams have had an excellent track record in World & European championships, at one time holding more team and individual medals than all other countries except the USA and France. However, worldwide, performance in Endurance Riding has improved significantly to the extent that GB’s standing has fallen. EGB’s plan for GB to return to successful world-class performance in the face of this improvement.

    • To be able to produce riders fit enough to compete
    • To be able to produce a professional level of crewing

Selection Panel

The selectors (3) will be appointed by the International Committee and the appointments are to be ratified by the Management Committee. The post of selector is to be held for 3 years and one new selector (the retiring selector may re-apply for the post)  is to be appointed each year.

The selection Panel comprises:

  • The Chairman of Selectors [has a casting vote if necessary] - Mrs D Latham
  • Selector – Mrs G Payton (with specific responsibility for the BEYRS and the BEDS
  • Selector – Maggie Magguire
  • The Chef of the appropriate Squad
  • The Vet of the appropriate Squad
  • The Chair of International in attendance but has no vote – Mrs S Broughton

Selection Process

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for selection Combinations must adhere to the following:

  • Be a British Citizen
  • Be registered with the FEI
  • Be qualified for the competition as required by the FEI
  • Be satisfactorily assessed by the Squad Management Team at a UK venue

Preparation

All riders that make themselves available for selection are expected to contribute to the aim of maximising their and the Team’s performance at the Championships. This will include attending Squad sessions in the UK, assisting other riders through the benefit of their own experience, communication, competition planning, behaviour and attitude at and before the Championships and generally seeking to improve performance at every opportunity. This attitude towards maximising performance may be used as a consideration when selection is made.

Weighting factors to be considered

  • Results from FEI Competitions taking into consideration:-the number of starters and finishers. The speed of completion in relation to that of the winners. The terrain over which the competition was run. Occasions when failure was due to metabolic reasons.
  • Capability of riding in a group and to orders
  • Efficiency and adaptability of crew

Force Majeure

If for some reason beyond the NGB’s control e.g. collapse of funding, disease outbreak in horses or humans, war or Terrorism, unavailability of suitable horses and/or riders EGB Management Committee with advice from the International Committee might make the decision either to change the selection policy or procedure which might include withdrawing the British Team.

Timetable for selection

Selection of combinations to an Elite Squad will take place at the latest early in the year of competition. There will be a maximum of 12 horses. These will work together to prepare for the Championship. Final Selection of the Team and reserves will take place 12 weeks prior to the Championship.

The selectors reserve the right to bring into the elite squad combinations that show particularly good form and performance and also to drop combinations whose form and/or performance deteriorates up to the final selection.

Substitution

The selectors may substitute a Team member for a reserve between Final Selection and departure. However the substitution must only be because either the rider is unfit to compete or there is a strong veterinary case for substitution or the performance of the Team member has dropped off to such an extent that for the success of the Team a substitution is vital. The latter situation will almost certainly occur as a result of a veterinary or medical problem which it may not be possible to define within the timescale and resources available.’ Being unfit to compete ‘is defined as “not being able to ride their horse in a manner which allows the rider to produce the standard of performance at which they were selected” The final decision of whether to substitute is made by the Selection Panel with advice from appropriate professionals It is the responsibility of the Chairman of Selectors to notify the appropriate personnel.

Nomination of Team and Individuals at the Championship

The Team Chef and Vet will discuss with the riders the ride plan and strategy for the Championship and will then nominate the team and individuals after the pre-ride vetting

Anyone who wishes to be considered for the British Team must abide by this selection policy.
