Make sure that you have carried out some pre-season checks to make sure that your steed is in good shape and prepared. As well as distance, interval training, groundwork, flatwork or whatever suits you and your horse for suppleness, fitness, stamina and responsiveness, you might want to consider the following:-

Saddle check. Your horse may have changed shape over the winter as it has been let down with time off or been busy doing other disciplines and activities. Check your saddle fits with a qualified saddle fitter. You may need to do this regularly throughout the season as your horse becomes fitter and changes shape with a different diet and different work. Achieving a good cadence on a long ride is really difficult if your horse can't move its shoulders and body freely. The saddle should also be comfortable for the rider for several hours. Also check stitching on stirrup leathers, girths and that everything is well with your saddle.

Tack check. A good bridle and bit fitting is just as important as a correctly fitting saddle. The horse has nerves and pressure points in its head and face that a badly fitting bridle will irritate. Endurance horses are wearing their tack for long periods of time and any pressure points quickly reveal themselves. Also check all of your stitching, fastners, buckles, D-rings etc for wear and tear/ Getting a repair done now is better than a tack failure mid ride!

Routine maintenance. Make sure that your vaccinations are up to date and have been uploaded to the Endurance GB website, teeth have been checked, wormers or worm egg count up to date. Farrier is happy with your hooves / shoes. Some riders have their horses scoped for ulcers and general gut health pre-season in case there is any underlying problem that needs treatment. Endurance rides and travelling long distances to events puts more strain on your horse than when you hack out of your yard for an hour or two.

Physiology. A check-over with your preferred equine physio, osteopath or body-work specialist is a good investment pre-season to make sure that everything is where is should be and there is no tightness or tension. Muscles that are sore or in spasm now will present themselves over long distances which may lead to failing the vet check or a longer term injury. Learning to do some equine massage and stretches yourself will also help you to know your horse's body and pick up any changes early on. It helps to keep them supple and is a great way to bond in the stable on a rainy day when you can't ride.

Vital Signs. We are lucky in endurance that our horses get vet checked at least twice as part of a competitive event. Make sure that your horse is used to having their heart rate taken and having hands on them and in their mouths. Knowing your horse's usual resting heart rate will tell you what you are aiming for before you start the ride and within 30 minutes of completing a ride when the vet will check their heart rate over a full minute. Also make sure that they will allow a human to look in their mouth and check their metabolics such as skin reflex tests. The atmosphere and environment may increase their heart rate so practicing the process and de-sensitising them to it will mean there's a better chance of a calmer horse on the big day.

Trot-up. It shouldn't need to be said but make sure your horse is sound before you leave home on the day of a ride. Practice running alongside your horse with a loose rope so that the vet can see their free movement without hinderance. There's nothing worse than getting ready to go, travelling, registering then getting 'spun' (failed) by the vet before the ride. Most experienced riders have done the walk of shame away from the vetting area back to their trailer or horsebox waving their friends goodbye as they set off on their ride.

This is all easier to write down than do and there may be other pre-season checks that you have on your list.

Most of all, enjoy knowing that you have a fit and healthy horse who is prepared for the fun of endurancing!

Some tips for pre-season checks so that your horse is ready for the season ahead.
A fit and healthy horse at the start of the season is more likely to be ready to go endurancing!
Some tips for pre-season checks so that your horse is ready for the season ahead.
A fit and healthy horse at the start of the season is more likely to be ready to go endurancing!
