At its core, endurance is about partnership: horse and rider covering distance together, building fitness and confidence while keeping horse welfare at the heart of everything we do.

Think of it as a personal challenge. For some, it’s the joy of riding a 16km loop with friends. For others, it’s training for a 160km international championship. Group Pleasure Rides are non-competitive rides of up to 34km, organised by your local group. Think of them as a fun day out with your horse: safe, well-marked routes, friendly fellow riders, and no pressure on speed. There are no jumps and no minimum speed, though most riders aim for a steady 8–12kmph. It’s a brilliant introduction to the sport — and a chance to enjoy the countryside in great company.

National Pleasure Rides

Held alongside our national events, National Pleasure Rides give you a taste of competition with the reassurance of a simple veterinary check before and after your ride. Complete the course, pass the vetting, and you’ll go home with a well-earned rosette. The completion speed is between 8–12kmph, so for a 20km route you’d expect to ride for between 1hr 40 minutes and 2hrs 30 mins. GERs are competitive rides starting at 20km and building all the way up to 160km. Your result is based not only on speed but also on your horse’s final heart rate — rewarding good training, pacing, and horsemanship. Longer rides are often divided into loops with “vet gates” in between, where your horse is checked for soundness, hydration, and heart rate (which must be below 64bpm). GERs combine the excitement of competition with a strong focus on horse welfare.

Competitive Endurance Rides (CERs)

CERs are endurance at its most competitive. Many people find it reassuring to buddy up for their first few events.
Don’t have a horsey friend to ride with? No problem. Let the ride secretary know when you enter, and they can usually pair you up with someone of similar pace or experience level. Crew are incredibly helpful at longer distances, but they’re certainly not essential when you’re starting out.
At grassroots and novice level, many riders happily manage without crew. If you do have someone to help, all the better — they can meet you at designated “crew points” to offer your horse a drink or a cooling “slosh” of water on hot days. But for shorter distances, you and your horse can usually complete comfortably without extra support.

Think of crew as a nice-to-have, not a must-have.

How do I win?

At Endurance GB, Pleasure Rides are exactly that — for pleasure. Graded Endurance Rides (GERs) are scored using the Performance Formula, which takes into account both speed and your horse’s final heart rate.
