It was first run in 1965 and since 1974 has been based around the village of Exford, on Exmoor, Somerset.

Endurance riding is the equestrian equivalent of marathon running, with a rider and their horse, met by their backup crew at strategic points along the route, riding a long distance across varying terrain, following a route on a map, reinforced by markers on the ground. Competitors will face the challenge of a course which includes steep ascents and descents from the high moors and beacon hills to the deeply incised wooded valleys and fast flowing water crossings, made famous by R D Blackmore’s Lorna Doone. Ground conditions may change from stony tracks to springy turf, with a mixture of slow steady sections and fast canter work. With riders out on course for most of the day, the weather may change from hour to hour, and in previous years Exmoor has provided scorching sun, rain, wind and even fog or snow.

To demonstrate that both horses and riders are sufficiently fit to take on the challenge, they have to complete appropriate qualifying rides before they can enter.

Top level endurance rides on flatter courses with faster going may offer classes up to 100 miles (160km) in one day, but for Exmoor the premier class is the Golden Horseshoe final which is a 100 mile ride run over two days. All horses are subject to a rigorous vetting at the start of each day, at intermediate points and at the finish, with the vets deciding whether or not a horse is fit to continue.

There are gold, silver and bronze awards to be won which are awarded on the basis of speed and veterinary penalty points.

A range of classes are offered, to enable riders to experience the special nature of riding on Exmoor, sharing much of the same route as the top horse and rider combinations:

The Golden Horseshoe - 160km (100 miles) over 2 days

The Stag - 120km (75 miles) over 2 days

The Exmoor Stallion - 120km over 3 days

The Fox - 80km (50 miles) in 1 day

The Hind - 80km over 2 days

The Otter and Otter Cub - 40km (25 miles) in 1 day

The Bambi - 25km (16 miles) pleasure ride

The event is organised by Shelley Bates and Maggie Pattinson on behalf of Endurance GB.

While much of the route is inaccessible by vehicles, there are road crossings and crew points where you can watch riders pass, and status is reported back to the venue through a radio communications network.
