To come away with a top 10 feels really special.”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eA horse developing in the right way\u003c/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLoni has been carefully produced, with a strong foundation built through his novice and qualification years in the UK before stepping up to FEI level.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“He’s naturally very balanced and economical in the way he moves, which helps massively over long distances,” Susy explained. “He’s also got a great brain and has always been comfortable doing long distances alone.”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTraining in Portugal has played a key role in his development, allowing a focused approach to both his physical and mental preparation.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“He really was the fittest I have ever seen any of my horses,” she said. “The team have worked hard on everything from ulcer care and metabolic health to his groundwork and hoof balance.”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eRiding the plan\u003c/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith Loni now based with a training team abroad, Susy approached the ride with a clear focus on execution rather than expectation.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“My job was to ride to the plan, not get carried away, and keep him feeling confident and happy,” she said.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat discipline paid off, with Loni completing part of the ride independently and finishing in excellent condition.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“He did about 20km of the second loop on his own, which he handled brilliantly. On the final loop I was in a group, but eased him back towards the end to stick to the plan. He finished feeling super fresh with zero adrenaline, which is exactly what we wanted.”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eManaging the challenges\u003c/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs with many international rides, the weekend presented its own challenges – particularly around stabling and hydration.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Loni doesn’t love FEI stabling, and that had an impact on his hydration, so we were managing that throughout the race,” Susy explained. “It’s something we’ve seen before, so it was about staying on top of it and making sure he stayed comfortable.”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDespite this, the pair delivered a confident performance, demonstrating both maturity and careful management.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eBuilding on experience\u003c/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFronteira represented a natural next step following their first CEI1* at Lavenham, which Susy describes as an ideal introduction to FEI competition.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“That ride was all about learning and getting that first experience,” she said. “Fronteira was about building on that and choosing a course that suited where he is in his training.”\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith a variety of terrain and conditions available across international fixtures, Susy is enjoying the opportunity to match races to Loni’s development.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“I genuinely think FEI rides around the world are all brilliant in their own way – they all offer something different.
